EDUCATION

Inspiring future generations through education and mentorship.

MALAYA offers weekly music and dance classes for adults and children which are open to the public and anyone interested.  We have a special initiative to teach weekly kulintang music and ongoing Pangalay dance classes. MALAYA also serves as a resource to our partner colleges and civic groups as teachers of the Philippine culture.  Come join us and experience what it is to be MALAYA!

As a Tausug...a native of the region where the (Pangalay) originated from, I was truly honored by how (MALAYA) portrayed my culture for I have never seen other Filipino-American dance companies perform Pangalay the way Malaya did that day.
— Becky Tan

MALAYA’s education and research initiative follows our mission to teach and perform with integrity to tradition.  We define tradition as past and current cultural shared practices. But we also believe in the progress of innovation and the freshness of creation.  From conducting research and staging what we learn from the field, borrowing the choreography of established folkloric groups, to creating original dance choreography for the stage, MALAYA’s artistic practice is extensive and always growing as we continue to research, learn, and teach the generations to come.
